In 1981 the Japanese man Issei Sagawa killed a fellow student at the Sorbonne, and ate parts of her body over the next two days. Due to various judicial mishaps he is released in 1986 and becomes a celebrity, especially in Japan: Sagawa writes books and restaurant critiques (!), acts in porn movies, and releases a manga about his murder in 2000. The filmmakers Lucien Castain-Taylor and Véréna Paravel allow no distance to Sagawa in their film CANIBA: for them it is a “fresco of flesh and desire”, for everyone else it is a harrowing experience.
